How do I update my streaming app?
Updating on phones and tablets
On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and scroll to 'Available Updates.' If the streaming app is listed, tap 'Update.' You can also enable automatic updates in Settings > App Store > App Updates. On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then 'Manage apps & device' > 'Updates available.' Tap 'Update' next to the app. To auto-update, go to Play Store settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps.
If you don't see an update, the app is likely current. Sometimes developers roll out updates gradually, so you might get it later than others.
- iPhone: App Store > profile > Available Updates
- Android: Play Store > profile > Manage apps & device
- Enable auto-updates in store settings
Updating on streaming devices and smart TVs
On Roku, go to Home > Settings > System > System update > Check now. Apps also update automatically, but you can force an update by highlighting the app, pressing the * key, and selecting 'Check for updates.' On Fire TV, go to Settings > Applications > Appstore > App Updates. On Apple TV, go to Settings > Apps > Automatically Update Apps (ensure it's on), or update via the App Store on tvOS. On Android TV/Google TV, open the Play Store, go to 'Manage apps & device' and update.
For smart TVs from Samsung, LG, or Vizio, updates are often handled through the TV's app store. Look for a 'My Apps' or 'Apps' section, then check for updates. Some TVs update apps automatically when you launch them.
Common mistakes
- Thinking you must manually update every app; most devices auto-update by default.
- Deleting and reinstalling the app as a first step—try a simple update first.
- Ignoring system updates; sometimes the app requires a newer version of the device's OS.
